17-11-2023 (JAKARTA) A devastating accident in Indonesia resulted in the loss of four lives, including two pilots, as two military aircraft crashed into a mountainside during a training exercise, according to an air force spokesman.
The incident occurred on Thursday when two Embraer Super Tucano planes departed from the city of Malang in East Java for regular formation training. Unfortunately, half an hour into the exercise, contact with the aircraft was lost.
Agung Sasongko Jati, the spokesman, confirmed that all the bodies have been recovered. “Two of them have been taken to the hangar, while the other two are being transported to the base,” he stated.
The pilots and co-pilots were located based on information provided by the public regarding the crash site. They were found on a mountainside near Mount Bromo in East Java, the most populous island in Indonesia. It is believed that the planes collided with a steep incline upon impact.
Due to the remote location, investigators are not expected to reach the crash site until Friday. Once on-site, they will analyze the flight recorders and other data from the aircraft to determine the cause of the crash. Mr. Jati mentioned that the investigation team will have access to voice communication, flight data, engine data, and video recordings, providing crucial insights into the incident.
The air force spokesman reassured reporters that the two turboprop light attack planes were in good condition before the training exercise commenced.
Indonesia, an expansive archipelago, has struggled with a concerning air safety record despite heavily relying on air transport to connect its numerous islands. Over the past nine years, the nation has experienced three major commercial plane crashes, highlighting the ongoing challenges it faces in maintaining aviation safety.
