14-11-2023 (LONDON) In an unexpected move, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak orchestrated a cabinet reshuffle, reappointing former Prime Minister David Cameron as foreign minister. The reshuffle was triggered by the dismissal of interior minister Suella Braverman, who had criticized the police, posing a threat to Sunak’s authority.
This latest move reflects Sunak’s efforts to realign his government, with the return of Cameron indicating a shift towards a more centrist approach. It also rekindles the contentious debate over Brexit, with Cameron’s previous role in triggering the 2016 referendum and subsequent departure from politics.
Braverman’s removal came after she defied Sunak by publishing an unauthorized article accusing the police of “double standards” at protests, igniting tensions between pro-Palestinian demonstrators and far-right counter-protesters.
While the removal of Braverman was anticipated, Cameron’s appointment surprised many in the Conservative Party. Welcomed by centrist lawmakers, it faced opposition from some on the right, who viewed it as a significant “Brexit surrender.”
Cameron, serving as prime minister from 2010 to 2016, expressed his willingness to take on the new role, emphasizing the importance of the UK standing by its allies in a time of global change. He had been out of politics since 2016 but can now return to government through an appointment to the House of Lords.
Centrist lawmakers view Cameron’s appointment as bringing international experience and sending a broader message to the country. It is seen as a signal that the Conservative Party is not veering further right. Critics, however, argue that Cameron’s return, coupled with Braverman’s sacking, exacerbates concerns among some party members that the Conservatives are shifting towards a more moderate stance.
James Cleverly, a former foreign minister, was appointed to replace Braverman. Regarded as a safe choice, Cleverly emphasized his commitment to keeping the country safe in his new role.
With Braverman sidelined, speculation arises about her potential leadership ambitions within the party, especially if the Conservatives face challenges in the anticipated 2024 election, where they consistently trail behind the Labour Party in polls. Opposition lawmakers argue that Sunak’s decision to appoint Cameron reflects desperation, contradicting his claim to bring about change from years of Tory failure.
The Prime Minister has asked me to serve as his Foreign Secretary and I have gladly accepted.
We are facing a daunting set of international challenges, including the war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East. At this time of profound global change, it has rarely been more…
