7-11-2023 (PUTRAJAYA) Malaysia will participate in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders Week in the United States while maintaining its unwavering stance on the Palestine issue, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Addressing concerns raised by various parties about his attendance, Anwar disclosed that he had consulted with member countries on the matter. He confirmed that leaders from across Asia and other APEC member nations would also be present at the meeting.
“As Prime Minister, it is my responsibility to safeguard Malaysia’s interests concerning security, peace, diplomatic relations, and the economy,” stated Anwar, who also serves as the Finance Minister.
He made it clear that this decision would not alter Malaysia’s position on the Palestine issue, emphasizing that their commitment to justice and the rights of the Palestinian people remains unwavering.
“Our stand remains strong and resolute. We will continue to advocate for justice and the rights of the Palestinian people,” Anwar asserted during the Finance Ministry’s monthly assembly on Tuesday.
Anwar acknowledged that his decision to attend the APEC meeting, following an invitation from U.S. President Joseph Biden, might not be well-received by certain groups.
“I am taking this action in the best interests of our country, and I want to emphasize that our support for Palestine will persist. Please do not label me as pro-Israel,” he urged.
The APEC Leaders Week is scheduled to take place in San Francisco from November 11 to 17. On October 31, Opposition lawmaker Wan Ahmad Fayshal Wan Ahmad had inquired whether Malaysia would boycott the APEC meeting as a gesture of solidarity with Palestine.
