31-10-2023 (SINGAPORE) Grab, the popular ride-hailing and food delivery platform, has refuted a viral TikTok video that purportedly shows a Grab delivery rider going above and beyond his duties. The video, uploaded by TikTok user thita.vy on October 28, captures her encounter with an individual dressed in a Grab uniform while on a flight from Bangkok to Singapore.
According to the user, the man claimed that he had been asked by a customer in Thailand to purchase chicken rice in Singapore. In the 27-second video, the man is seen carrying a Grab thermal bag, which he stows in the plane’s overhead compartment. The user stated that the encounter took place on October 12 at Don Mueang International Airport, but she did not inquire about who paid for the supposed delivery rider’s ticket.
Since its upload, the video has garnered over 3.4 million views, with some viewers questioning its authenticity and others playfully asserting that “Singapore chicken rice is better than Malaysia’s.”
On October 30, digital news outlet Mothership ran a story with the headline “Grab delivery rider flies from Thailand to S’pore to pick up chicken rice.” However, Grab has intervened to clarify that the video is “fictional.”
A spokesperson from Grab informed local news outlet The Straits Times, stating, “We understand that the fictional video was created by a member of the public independently. We do not offer such a service, and the person starring as a delivery partner in the video is not registered with Grab.”
The company further emphasized that their only cross-border delivery service is the 100+ Cities Delivery (BETA) feature, which enables users to order and send food and physical gifts from GrabFood and GrabMart merchant-partners available in the recipient’s city within an hour.
