30-10-2023 (FLORIDA) Amidst Halloween celebrations in the vibrant Florida city of Tampa, a sudden outbreak of gunfire in the early hours of Sunday left at least two people dead and 18 others injured.
The violence erupted at approximately 3 a.m. in the historic Ybor City neighbourhood when a confrontation between two groups spiralled into chaos, as reported by the police. At the time, the streets were teeming with hundreds of people who had been enjoying the bars and clubs, and as the shooting began, panic gripped the crowds, prompting a frantic scramble for safety.
Social media site X played host to numerous videos capturing the pandemonium, with throngs of individuals racing through the streets while the unmistakable sound of multiple gunshots rang out. In the aftermath, these videos also depicted police officers urgently tending to the injured victims, many of whom were still adorned in Halloween costumes.
Tampa police issued a preliminary report stating, “While early in the investigation, indications are that an altercation between two groups escalated to gunfire, resulting in one male subject dying at the scene and 19 victims being transported to nearby hospitals.”
Regrettably, one of the transported victims succumbed to their injuries and passed away at the hospital, as confirmed by the police.
Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw expressed condolences, saying, “Our thoughts are with the victims impacted by this senseless act, and our detectives are committed to holding those involved accountable.”
As of Sunday, one individual has been detained, and the authorities are actively pursuing other individuals believed to be involved in the shooting incident.
