26-10-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) A peculiar and captivating spectacle unfolded in the skies above Sungai Besar, Selangor, as residents witnessed an unusual phenomenon that bathed the night sky in an eerie shade of green. Social media users were quick to share their astonishment, posting images and videos of the mesmerizing green-lit sky on platforms like the Facebook Group “I LOVE SUNGAI BESAR.”
One Facebook user couldn’t contain his curiosity, commenting, “Why is the light so crazy bright?” alongside an image capturing the breathtaking green glow.
As the news spread, more residents of Sungai Besar came forward to share their experiences and observations of this mysterious occurrence. It became evident that the mesmerizing green light was emanating from a fishing boat used for catching fish and squid.
Haliza Abdul Rahman, an expert in environmental governance from Universiti Putra Malaysia, shed some light on the phenomenon. She explained that the green lights illuminating the sky were a signal that the fishing season had commenced.
“The monsoon season in the northeast marks the prime time for fishing and squid catching, leading many fishermen to employ green lights to attract marine life,” Haliza stated, as quoted by Utusan Malaysia.
Supporting this explanation, some Facebook users shared videos and images depicting green lights situated at the end of docks, further indicating the involvement of fishing activities. In one photo, a squid, known as “sotong” locally, was captured against the backdrop of the familiar green illumination.
