20-10-2023 (SINGAPORE) Singapore’s Zeng Jian achieved a significant milestone in her table tennis career by securing her maiden World Table Tennis (WTT) singles title on Thursday, October 19th. In the final match of the WTT Feeder Doha II tournament, Zeng displayed her prowess by defeating Anna Hursey from Wales, with a convincing 3-0 victory (11-6, 11-5, 11-5). The epic showdown unfolded at the Aspire Ladies Sports Hall in the Qatari capital.
Zeng, currently ranked 64th in the world, demonstrated her exceptional skills and composure throughout the tournament. Her journey to the championship began on Tuesday with a dominant 3-0 win over South Korea’s Choi Seoyeon in the round of 32.
The following day, Zeng found herself engaged in an intense battle, eventually emerging victorious with a hard-fought 3-2 win over China’s Gao Yuxin in the round of 16. Undeterred by the competition, she continued her winning streak later that day, recording another impressive 3-0 victory, this time against Italy’s Giorgia Piccolin in the quarter-finals.
The pinnacle of her campaign was reached on Thursday morning when Zeng secured her place in the final with a 3-1 win against Huang Yi-hua from Chinese Taipei in the semi-finals.
The WTT website reports that the winners of the WTT Feeder Doha II singles category receive a prize of US$550 (equivalent to S$755) in addition to accumulating 125 valuable ranking points.
The WTT Feeder Series, often considered a stepping stone to the prestigious WTT Series, serves as a platform for rising stars, local and regional players, and individuals who have made a comeback to the sport following challenges such as injuries, career hiatuses, or loss of form.
This tournament marked the second edition of the WTT Feeder Series in Doha this year, with the first event having taken place in January.
