12-10-2023 (SINGAPORE) Singapore’s Law and Home Affairs Minister, K Shanmugam, denounced the atrocities committed in Hamas’ recent terror attack on Israel, stating that such acts “cannot be justified by any rationale whatsoever.” Speaking on October 12, he stressed the importance of unequivocally condemning terrorist attacks while also acknowledging the ongoing issues in the region.
The attack on October 7 involved hundreds of gunmen from the militant group Hamas crossing the barrier fence into Israel and causing significant destruction, resulting in the deaths of at least 1,200 people, predominantly civilians. In response, Israel initiated a comprehensive siege on Gaza and conducted a bombing campaign that resulted in the destruction of entire neighborhoods and additional casualties.
Minister Shanmugam described Hamas’ attack as a massive terrorist act, emphasizing that the kidnapping and unjustified murder of children and other acts of cruelty are both shocking and horrifying. He called for a clear and unequivocal condemnation of such extreme violence.
Singapore’s stance on the two-state solution, as previously expressed, remains well-known. The country hopes for both Israeli and Palestinian sides to engage in direct negotiations, eventually achieving a two-state solution that allows them to coexist in peace and security.
Minister Shanmugam acknowledged that Israel would respond to Hamas’ attack with a severe reaction and their full might. He emphasized that Israel’s response must adhere to international law and the rules of war, as suggested by several other countries.
While condemning acts of terrorism and violence, Minister Shanmugam also stressed the importance of safeguarding Singapore’s internal racial and religious peace. He expressed the need for vigilance, given that terrorist groups may exploit international conflicts, leading to calls for wider jihad against Israel and reports of anti-Semitic attacks abroad. He noted that Singapore had so far managed to maintain internal stability during such global events and emphasized the necessity of safeguarding the country’s internal peace.
Singapore’s security agencies are closely monitoring the situation, and additional security measures are being implemented, with increased patrols and reassessment of security at potential targets. Emergency response forces are on high alert to address any incidents that may arise.
In a condolence letter to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dated October 8, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong expressed his deep sadness over the tragic loss of Israeli lives resulting from Hamas’ terrorist attacks. He strongly condemned the attacks and expressed his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Israel, particularly the victims’ families. He also extended well-wishes for the recovery of the injured, expressing confidence in Israel’s strength and unity during the challenging times ahead.
