10-10-2023 (SINGAPORE) A 60-year-old woman came close to losing her life after a metal shard struck her throat near a construction site in Ang Mo Kio, according to reports. The incident, which happened near Block 646 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6, was described by the woman’s daughter-in-law, Noris. She explained that a doctor informed them that the metal shard had come extremely close to a major vein.
The incident unfolded as the woman was walking towards a bus stop through a covered walkway within the construction site. A migrant worker had stopped her, and as she stood less than 10 meters away, a crane was moving from her right to her left toward the worksite. Multiple pieces of debris struck her as the crane moved.
To avoid further debris, the woman quickly moved toward a staircase between an open-air car park and Block 646 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6. It was here that she felt a sharp pain in her neck and discovered she was bleeding profusely. She immediately sought help from passersby, who quickly called an ambulance.
A couple and a Grab delivery rider assisted the woman, and a woman who identified herself as a nurse applied pressure to her neck to control the bleeding until paramedics arrived. The Singapore Civil Defence Force later confirmed that the woman was transported to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. At the hospital, the doctor noted that the metal shard had lodged near a major vein in her throat, which could have been fatal had it struck it.
The family expressed their gratitude to the passersby and hoped to contact them to convey their appreciation.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) responded to the incident, stating that the crane movement was conducted in a controlled manner, with pedestrians kept at a safe distance. They also confirmed that they are cooperating with their contractor to provide assistance to the injured pedestrian following her hospital discharge.
The construction site is believed to be part of the new North-South Corridor (NSC), which will serve several towns in Singapore and help alleviate traffic along the north-south transportation axis. The NSC is expected to be completed in phases from 2027.
