10-10-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) The Terengganu State Government in Malaysia is set to enforce a dress code that aligns with Syariah-friendly clothing ethics, particularly targeting foreign tourists. In order to ensure compliance with the dress code, monitoring and enforcement measures will be implemented, working closely with tourism operators.
According to a report by Berita Harian, Datuk Razali Idris, the Terengganu State Tourism, Culture, Environment, and Climate Change Committee Chairman, revealed that the enforcement will be particularly focused on tourist islands such as Pulau Redang and Pulau Perhentian, which are popular among international tourists. “Syariah-friendly clothing etiquette begins at all entry points to the state. We will also display signage about this etiquette at all entrances to Terengganu,” he stated.
The decision to strengthen the enforcement of Syariah-friendly clothing comes after Zuraida Md Noor, the Ladang assemblyperson, called on the state government to take action in order to foster better understanding among visitors regarding the dress code. Zuraida expressed her frustration with Muslim tourists who dare to violate the Tourism Guidelines established by the state government, citing a lack of awareness and weak enforcement as contributing factors.
Datuk Razali acknowledged that there is still a need to educate both domestic and international tourists about the dress code, as some individuals continue to dress inappropriately, particularly when visiting resort islands in the state. “We are committed to empowering and educating Muslim tourists from all around the world to adhere to the dress code,” he added.
