10-10-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged the public to combat the stigma surrounding mental health issues, in conjunction with the celebration of World Mental Health Day 2023. During the Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday, Anwar emphasized the importance of raising awareness and promoting understanding of mental health.
Wearing a green ribbon pin, an internationally recognized symbol of mental health awareness, Anwar called for an end to the stigma associated with mental health problems. He stated, “Mental health belongs to all, stop the stigma. The green ribbon I wear is an international symbol of mental health. Happy World Mental Health Day 2023.”
In a show of support, several members of Parliament were also observed wearing green ribbons, demonstrating their commitment to the mental health awareness campaign.
Additionally, while presenting the motion on the 12th Malaysia Plan Mid-Term Review in the Dewan Rakyat, Anwar announced the government’s plans to establish a dedicated mental health institute. The institute aims to address the growing concerns surrounding mental health in the country, recognizing it as a pressing health issue.
