3-10-2023 (MANILA) The mother of a Grade 5 student who tragically passed away three days after allegedly being slapped by their teacher is seeking justice for her child’s death. Elena Minggoy revealed that her 14-year-old son died on Monday morning after medical examinations revealed a ruptured blood vessel in his brain, as reported by Radyo Pilipinas.
In an emotional plea, Minggoy called on Vice President Sara Duterte, who also serves as the education secretary, to assist in ensuring justice for her son’s untimely demise. However, an autopsy report to confirm the cause of death is still pending due to financial constraints, Minggoy disclosed during an interview with Radyo 630 on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Department of Education (DepEd) division office in Antipolo City, along with the regional office, has initiated an investigation into the incident, according to statements made by DepEd representatives through Viber.
DepEd Spokesperson Michael Poa stated that the schools division superintendent is personally overseeing the inquiry and will visit Peñafrancia Elementary School to conduct a thorough investigation.
According to Minggoy’s account, her son was slapped by his teacher after being reprimanded for the noise caused by his classmates during a test. Recounting her son’s version of events, Minggoy revealed that following the scolding, the teacher grabbed him by the collar, pulled his hair, and delivered a slap.
“My son told me that after being slapped, he temporarily experienced deafness,” Minggoy conveyed in Filipino.
Despite the incident, the Grade 5 student continued attending school for three more days. However, on September 26, he began experiencing dizziness, headaches, and vomiting, prompting immediate medical attention and hospitalization, Minggoy shared.
Tragically, Minggoy’s son slipped into a coma and succumbed to his injuries on Monday. Brain scans and X-ray examinations revealed internal bleeding in his brain.
In response to the incident, a representative from the local government of Antipolo City informed Philstar.com that a team has been assembled to investigate the matter.
“DepEd Antipolo notified the Mayor about the incident last night. While awaiting the written report, Mayor Ynares has already formed a team consisting of the city social welfare officer, health officer, legal officer, and others to assess the situation and determine necessary interventions moving forward,” the Antipolo city government representative stated.
