27-9-2023 (PHNOM PENH) Cambodia’s senior minister, Ouch Borith, has called for a concerted global effort to eradicate nuclear weapons during his address at the High-Level Plenary Meeting commemorating and promoting the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. The event took place in New York, United States, on September 26, and Borith’s speech was released to the media on Wednesday.
In his address, Borith emphasized the pressing need for all nations, including nuclear weapon states (NWS), to engage in substantive dialogue and demonstrate genuine commitment to the principles of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
He stressed, “We must redouble our efforts towards our shared objective: a world free of nuclear weapons.”
Borith underlined Cambodia’s commitment, as a peace-loving nation and a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), to the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ) and its associated action plan.
Borith expressed Cambodia’s deep appreciation for the United Nations Secretary-General’s policy brief titled “A New Agenda for Peace,” which was issued in July 2023. He lauded this brief for charting the path for the international community to enhance multilateral efforts aimed at upholding international peace and security underpinned by international law.
