22-9-2023 (NEW YORK) Actress Sophie Turner has filed a lawsuit against her estranged husband, pop star Joe Jonas, in an effort to secure the passports of their two young daughters, enabling her to take them to England.
The legal action comes after Turner, known for her role as Sansa Stark in HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” was served with divorce papers earlier this month, marking the end of their four-year marriage. Turner’s petition, filed in federal court in New York, invokes the child abduction provisions of the Hague Convention—an international treaty designed to facilitate the return of a child taken from their habitual country of residence.
In the petition, Turner, 27, states that she and Jonas, 34, had originally planned to raise their daughters in her home country of England. The filing emphasizes that the three-year-old and one-year-old girls are deeply immersed in English daily life and culture.
The couple had reached a mutual decision to relocate to England in April of this year. While Jonas embarked on a tour with his band, the Jonas Brothers, in the United States during parts of August and September, Turner, who was filming a television series in England, intended to have the children travel with Jonas and a nanny. Turner planned to join them in New York after completing her filming on September 14.
However, Turner alleges that the breakdown of their marriage occurred suddenly. Jonas filed for divorce in Florida on September 1, and Turner learned about it through media reports on September 5. The couple released a joint statement on September 6, announcing their amicable decision to end their marriage.
Turner claims that she met with Jonas on September 17 and requested the passports for their daughters to facilitate their return to England. However, Jonas refused to relinquish the passports, citing that the girls were born in the United States and hold dual US and British citizenship.
As per the court filing, the girls are currently residing with Turner in a Manhattan hotel. The Jonas Brothers had performances scheduled in Philadelphia on Thursday and in Baltimore on Friday.
In response to the legal action, Jonas issued a statement asserting his desire for shared parenting and an upbringing that involves both parents, with the children being raised in both the United States and the UK. He characterized the legal dispute as an unfortunate consequence of their marriage ending and criticized the use of terms like “abduction” as misleading or an abuse of the legal system.
Jonas emphasized that he did not surprise Turner with divorce papers but filed for divorce after multiple conversations with her.
Joe Jonas, along with his brothers Nick and Kevin, achieved pop idol status when they formed the Jonas Brothers in 2005. He and Sophie Turner met in 2016 and married in 2019.
