17-9-2023 (NANNING) Malaysia and China have entered into significant agreements worth a staggering RM19.84 billion, as three memoranda of understanding (MOUs) were signed between the two countries. The signing ceremony took place in Nanning, China, and marked a milestone in the bilateral relations between Malaysia and China.
The first MOU, valued at RM15 billion, was signed between Citaglobal Bhd and Shanghai Sus Environment. The agreement focuses on exploring potential collaborations in the development of waste-to-energy power plants, primarily in Malaysia. This initiative aims to address the growing concern of waste management while harnessing renewable energy sources.
In another significant move, PM Access World and Beibu Gulf International Port Group signed an MOU worth RM2.34 billion. The agreement aims to foster cooperation in warehousing and logistics, with a specific focus on supporting the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor. This collaboration seeks to enhance economic and trade ties between Guangxi and Malaysia, bolstering bilateral trade activities.
The final MOU, worth RM2.5 billion, was signed between Sime Darby Oils International Limited and Guangxi Beibu Gulf Port Group. This agreement aims to establish a trading and distribution center for refined palm oil and shortening in Qinzhou. With an estimated annual transaction volume of 500,000 tonnes, this collaboration will significantly contribute to the palm oil industry and enhance trade between the two countries.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who was accompanied by a delegation including Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Chan Foong Hin, Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming, and Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin. The presence of high-ranking officials exemplifies the importance Malaysia places on these agreements and signifies the commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with China.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is currently in Nanning, China, for a one-day working visit to attend the 20th China-Asean Expo (CAExpo) and the China-Asean Business and Investment Summit (Cabis). During his visit, Anwar is scheduled to hold separate closed-door meetings with key industry players, including the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) and Huawei. These meetings reflect the Prime Minister’s dedication to exploring further avenues of collaboration and creating mutually beneficial partnerships.
Following his engagements, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is expected to deliver a press conference in Nanning, where he will address the media and provide insights into the outcomes of his discussions. This public statement will shed light on the significance of these agreements and their potential impact on Malaysia-China relations.
