8-9-2023 (SINGAPORE) In an effort to strengthen its food security, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has announced the approval of Türkiye as a new country for exporting chicken eggs to Singapore. This move brings the total number of countries and regions accredited for hen shell egg exports to 19, up from 12 in 2019.
The SFA emphasized the importance of diversifying Singapore’s egg supply sources, especially in light of the current global egg shortage caused by an unprecedented avian flu outbreak, supply chain issues, and rising feed and fuel costs. The agency encouraged consumers to be flexible with their food options in case of disruptions and to explore new food sources as a means of building Singapore’s food resilience.
In recent months, Singapore has taken steps to expand its egg supply sources. In April, the country approved the export of chicken eggs from Indonesia, and in December 2022, it approved egg exports from Brunei. Additionally, local operator ISE Foods Holdings (IFH) announced plans to open Singapore’s fourth egg farm in 2024.
Currently, imports account for approximately 70% of Singapore’s egg supply. The SFA’s efforts to diversify the country’s egg sources and increase local production are intended to ensure a stable and secure food supply for the future.
