8-9-2023 (SINGAPORE) The Cat Welfare Society (CWS) and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) joined forces to conduct a 12-hour rescue operation, saving 20 cats discovered in dire conditions within a flat in Bukit Merah.
In an Instagram post, SPCA revealed that it received an “urgent” alert from CWS on August 18, prompting immediate action.
The dire situation unfolded after a sewage pipe burst eight days prior to the case being reported to CWS, causing waste matter to flood the flat. The 20 cats, including a kitten, were left stranded in these appalling conditions.
SPCA and CWS swiftly responded and were granted access to the unit past midnight on the same day. They found the floor “covered” in human waste, with some cats resorting to drinking the sewage pipe leak.
Two cats were placed in cages, and none of the 20 cats had access to fresh water for more than a week.
Authorities were alerted promptly to ensure the cats received urgent medical care. SPCA emphasized that the cats were at risk of malnutrition and poisoning due to the toxins in human waste. They stated that without their timely intervention, the cats could have faced life-threatening consequences.
Executive director of SPCA, Aarthi Sankar, confirmed that the cats are now under the custody of the authorities. She added that after clearing all health checks, they would support the authorities in finding new homes for the cats.
Notably, none of the cats were neutered or microchipped. The Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) of the National Parks Board (NParks) confirmed that they are currently in possession of the cats, with ongoing investigations.
Jessica Kwok, Group Director of AVS, emphasized their commitment to taking all cases related to animal welfare seriously and conducting thorough investigations.
SPCA emphasized that this is not the first time they have encountered such situations. They stressed that pets are a lifelong responsibility, and pet owners should provide care under all circumstances. The organization encouraged pet owners to have contingency plans in case they are unable to care for their pets, suggesting seeking assistance from relatives or friends.
