7-9-2023 (BANGKOK) Thailand is gearing up for the launch of its primary Earth Observation satellite, Thailand Earth Observation Satellite 2 (THEOS-2), scheduled to take place in October. The satellite aims to fulfill its mission of Earth Observation, providing valuable insights into various aspects of the planet.
Following its successful development and testing phase, THEOS-2 has been transported from Airbus Defence and Space in Toulouse, France to the European spaceport located in French Guiana, South America. The satellite will undergo meticulous examinations at every stage before being integrated with the rocket fairing in preparation for its upcoming journey to space.
Thailand’s first Earth Observation satellite, Thaichote (THEOS-1), launched on October 1, 2008, is approaching the end of its operational lifespan. THEOS-2 is designed to succeed its predecessor and continue the crucial task of Earth Observation. The satellite’s primary objective is to promote the advancement and application of space technology and geoinformatics for national development.
Weighing approximately 425kg, THEOS-2 possesses the capability to capture high-resolution imagery with a spatial resolution of 50cm. It serves as a functional satellite that facilitates geospatial monitoring both within and beyond the country’s borders. This will significantly contribute to the development and improvement of space and geoinformatics technology infrastructure across four key areas: space technology infrastructure, human resource development, space industry advancement, and geoinformatics service enhancement.
Moreover, THEOS-2 will enhance services in six critical domains: mapping, agriculture and food security, integrated water management, disaster and geo-hazard management, urban and economic corridor planning, as well as natural resources and ecosystem assessment. By providing valuable data and insights in these areas, the satellite will play a crucial role in supporting informed decision-making and sustainable development in Thailand.
As the launch of THEOS-2 approaches, anticipation grows for the valuable contributions it will make in furthering Earth Observation capabilities and advancing national development in Thailand.
