4-9-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) Former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has sparked controversy by referring to political parties led by non-Malays as ‘parti pendatang’ (migrant parties). During a ceramah (public lecture) at the Bakri PAS Markaz, he expressed his concerns about the unwillingness of non-Malays to assimilate with Malay culture and the creation of their own political parties, which he believes contributes to racial issues in Malaysia.
Dr. Mahathir pointed out that in other countries like Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia, political parties catering to migrants exist without causing the same level of tension. However, he lamented that in Malaysia, despite living in the country and obtaining citizenship, some non-Malays continue to distance themselves culturally and politically.
“In politics, they are establishing their own parties. This is why there are still racial issues in this country. It is not that we do not like them, but they are the ones who do not like us,” he remarked during the ceramah.
Dr. Mahathir also took aim at Pakatan Harapan, stating that its leader advocates for a Malaysia that belongs not only to Malays but to all. He expressed his disagreement with this perspective, asserting that Malaysia was explored and developed primarily by Malays.
He concluded by emphasizing his intention to continue discussing the “3R” issues, referring to Race, Religion, and Royalty, as he believes it is his right to address these matters openly.
