4-9-2023 (WASHINGTON) US President Joe Biden expressed his disappointment on Sunday (Sep 3) regarding Chinese President Xi Jinping’s absence from the upcoming summit of G20 leaders in India. However, Biden also noted that he anticipates the opportunity to meet with President Xi in another context.
“I am disappointed … but I am going to get to see him,” Biden stated during a press briefing in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. He did not provide further details about the nature of the meeting.
President Biden is scheduled to visit India from September 7 to 10 for the G20 summit, followed by a trip to Vietnam. This visit is part of his administration’s efforts to bolster US relations in the Asia-Pacific region.
It is widely anticipated that President Xi will not attend the G20 summit, with Chinese Premier Li Qiang expected to represent Beijing at the meeting in New Delhi, as reported by sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters.
When asked if he was looking forward to his upcoming trip, President Biden responded, “Yes, I am.”
He further commented, “I want a little more … coordination. I think they both (India and Vietnam) want much closer relations with the United States, and that can be very helpful.”
