3-9-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) Tsoi Luen, one of the “Four Great Talents of Hong Kong,” at the age of 82, made headlines in March this year when he announced a temporary hiatus from updating his Facebook page due to health issues. In mid-April, he posted an update explaining that he had suffered a fall resulting in a broken collarbone, which required surgery. After disappearing for four and a half months, Tsoi Luen was recently spotted by netizens in Malaysia. The encounter revealed a frail appearance as he relied on a wheelchair for mobility. To everyone’s concern, he was seen wearing a thick coat and a scarf despite the hot weather, looking noticeably thin. It turns out that Tsoi Luen’s visit to Malaysia was to attend his own charity calligraphy exhibition, titled “Hastily Done, But Not Sloppy,” held in Kuala Lumpur. During a panel discussion, he shared details about his fall, and fellow actress Chung Chuhung, also known as “Hung Goo,” made an appearance to show support.
When Tsoi Luen updated his followers about his condition in April, he mentioned that the recovery process would be lengthy, stating, “The doctors immediately replaced a piece of metal for me, and I am currently recuperating in the hospital. This illness will take a while.” He expressed his melancholy and requested space from everyone. During the panel discussion, Tsoi Luen revealed that he sustained the injury while trying to save his wife, Cheung Kingman: “This wife of mine has been giving me a hard time for decades. She is already 84 years old. When she fell, I rushed to save her, but I ended up falling myself. However, she managed to get up, and I ended up with broken bones. It was a painful and miserable period of time. Later, I remembered a quote from Ni Kuang, ‘To overcome real pain, you have to eat ‘forced pain.’ If one pill is not enough, eat two. It’s like eating peanuts; it will heal your physical pain. Other psychological pain is created by oneself, so if you don’t think about it, it won’t bother you.’ So, I try not to think about it.”
Tsoi Luen, who has been active in the literary scene for many years and is known as one of the “Four Great Talents of Hong Kong” alongside Louis Cha, Ni Kuang, and James Wong, expressed his regret that the other three have passed away. When asked what he would say to Ni Kuang and James Wong if they were standing in front of him, Tsoi Luen burst into laughter and jokingly said, “I would say, ‘I f***ing hate you! You left too soon without waiting for me.'” This remark elicited laughter from the audience. He was then asked what profession he would have pursued if he were still young, to which he replied with wit, “I have done most things in life, but there is one thing I really wanted to do but couldn’t—running a brothel.” The crowd found his response quite humorous.
