2-9-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) A woman identified by her online alias Qingqing Zijin found herself in the intensive care unit (ICU) with a hefty medical bill of RM14,000 after suffering from food poisoning caused by indulging in stinky tofu purchased from a hawker at a night market in Kuala Lumpur. The incident occurred on August 10, and Zijin shared her harrowing experience with Sin Chew Daily.
The day after consuming the pungent delicacy, Zijin developed symptoms of fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. Concerned about her deteriorating condition, she was promptly rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was immediately admitted to the ICU as her blood pressure plummeted to a dangerously low level of 60mmHg.
Medical tests later confirmed that Zijin had contracted vibriosis, a bacterial infection commonly associated with the consumption of raw or undercooked seafood. Reflecting on her ordeal, Zijin admitted, “Initially, I was uncertain whether the stinky tofu was the culprit. It was only after my elder sister also fell ill due to food poisoning that I became certain of its source.”
Fortunately, most of the medical expenses for Zijin’s five-day hospital stay were covered by insurance, leaving her with a manageable payment of only RM1,000.
