7-8-2023 (YANGON) Myanmar has exported more than 800,000 tons of corn in the first four months of the 2023-24 fiscal year, which began on April 1, according to the Myanmar Corn Industrial Association (MCIA) on Monday.
During this period, the Southeast Asian nation earned over 240 million U.S. dollars from corn exports, as reported by the MCIA.
Phyo Ko Ko Naing, the vice chairman of MCIA, attributed the relatively slow corn export performance this year to the decline in global corn prices and certain policy issues.
Shan State accounts for approximately 65 percent of Myanmar’s corn cultivation and production, while Ayeyarwaddy Region contributes around 10 percent. Additionally, corn is cultivated in Mandalay and Bago regions, as well as Kayin and Kachin states, Naing stated.
Annually, Myanmar produces approximately 3.2 million tons of corn, with around 2 million tons being exported to foreign markets.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, Myanmar’s total exports between April 1 and July 28 this year were valued at over 5.09 billion dollars.
