7-8-2023 (SINGAPORE) In a remarkable victory, a lion dance troupe from Singapore has emerged as the champion at the Genting World Lion Dance Championships on Sunday (Aug 6), ending a 13-year winning streak held by Malaysian teams.
Singapore’s Yiwei Athletic Association sent two teams to compete in the three-day championship organized by Resorts World Genting in Malaysia. It was their Team B that secured the win with an impressive score of 9.73 points in the finals on Sunday afternoon. The team showcased exceptional flexibility in pile jumping, skillfully executed challenging movements on the tightrope, and effectively portrayed the lion’s expressions of joy, anger, surprise, and doubt, according to a report from China Press.
Meanwhile, Yiwei’s Team A clinched the third position with a score of 9.58 points. The Khuan Loke Dragon and Lion Dance Association from Selangor, Malaysia, secured the second spot with 9.64 points.
This victory marks the culmination of Yiwei’s consistent success over the years. The association’s team had previously won the first Prime Minister’s Cup International High Pole Lion Dance Championship in Kuala Lumpur in September last year, taking home the prestigious top prize of RM38,000 (US$8,300).
The Genting World Lion Dance Championships, now in its 14th edition, attracted a total of 36 teams from around the world this year, including participants from the United States, France, and Australia. For the past 13 competitions, Malaysian troupes had held the top spot, as reported by China Press. The Muar Guansheng Temple Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe from Johor had secured 12 championships, while the Kedah Hongde Sports Association Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe had won one.
According to China Press, the winning team at the Genting championship will be awarded a cash prize of US$15,000, along with trophies and medals. The first and second runners-up will receive cash prizes of US$8,000 and US$5,000, respectively, in addition to trophies and medals.
