6-8-2023 (WASHINGTON) Tragedy struck Southeast D.C. as three individuals lost their lives in a horrific act of violence, according to D.C. Acting Police Chief Pamela Smith. At least two others have been hospitalized as a result of the incident, which Smith described as senseless and deeply troubling.
Addressing the press, Chief Smith emphasized the urgent need to put an end to the rampant gun violence that plagues the community. She expressed her frustration, stating, “Let me be clear: this gun violence has to stop. It is incredibly frustrating. We know that someone in the community knows what’s happening.”
The incident unfolded before 9 p.m. near the intersection of Good Hope Road and 16th Street SE. Police officers were already in the vicinity responding to reports of gunshots when they discovered five victims – four males and one female – at the scene.
Tragically, two males and one female were pronounced dead at the site of the shooting. The remaining two males were swiftly transported to a local hospital, and their current conditions remain unknown.
Chief Smith reassured residents that the city is not a warzone and vowed to prioritize the safety and well-being of the community. She pledged that D.C.’s investigators would diligently pursue the case, urging any potential additional victims to come forward.
“We realize that there may be others who may have been injured tonight. We’re asking you to come forward,” she appealed.
As investigations continue, authorities have temporarily closed off Good Hope Road SE between 13th and Fendal Streets to facilitate the ongoing inquiry.
