5-8-2023 (MANILA) Tragedy struck on Saturday as a ferry boat carrying 95 people sank off Corcuera, a town on Simara island in Romblon province, central Philippines. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) confirmed one fatality in the incident.
According to the PCG, the ill-fated motorboat, designed to accommodate a maximum of 96 passengers, was carrying 90 passengers and five crew members. It had departed from Calatrava town on Tablas island in Romblon and was en route to Corcuera when the accident occurred at approximately 12:30 pm local time.
Thankfully, rescue efforts managed to save the lives of the other 94 individuals who were aboard the half-submerged boat, as stated by the PCG.
As of now, all 95 people on board have been accounted for, and search and rescue operations are still ongoing, reported the PCG.
The cause of the accident has not been officially disclosed by the PCG. However, a local official, speaking in a radio interview, mentioned that the boat might have collided with a hard object, leading to its submergence.
Authorities are investigating the incident further to understand the exact circumstances that led to this tragic event. Meanwhile, the community is left in mourning for the loss of one life and expressing gratitude for the successful rescue of the other 94 passengers and crew members.
