5-8-2023 (SINGAPORE) As the country gears up to celebrate National Day, the national flag is a common sight adorning homes and offices across Singapore. However, a recent incident involving the disrespectful display of the flag has sparked unhappiness and condemnation among netizens.
The issue came to light when Facebook user Wendy Lee posted a photo on the Complaint Singapore page on Aug 4, showing the Singapore flag hanging below a HDB window in Pasir Ris. What caused the uproar was that four pieces of underwear were seen hung over the flag, which many perceived as a blatant sign of disrespect.
Lee’s caption accompanying the photo read, “Respect our country’s flag… Singapore,” and she further revealed that she had reported the matter to the town council. The post quickly gained traction, drawing the attention of numerous netizens who expressed their dissatisfaction with such a disrespectful act towards the national flag.
One commenter urged strong action, stating, “The household should be heavily fined.” Others pointed out that while the display of the national flag is not compulsory, it should still be treated with utmost respect, and such actions are considered an offense.
In light of such incidents, it is essential to understand the guidelines for displaying the national flag. Under the National Symbols Act, which took effect on Aug 1, penalties for the misuse of national symbols, including the national flag, were increased to a maximum of $30,000 and six months’ imprisonment to deter disrespectful use.
In the lead-up to Singapore’s 58th National Day celebration, the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) has encouraged all Singaporeans to proudly display the national flag during the National Day celebration period, which spans from July 1 to Sept 30.
The MCCY emphasized the significance of the national flag, not only as a visible symbol of Singapore’s statehood but also as a representation of national unity and resilience. As such, it should be treated with the utmost respect and used in an appropriate and dignified manner.
One aspect stressed by the authorities is the handling of the national flag. It should not be displayed outdoors together with other laundry, as this may be deemed inappropriate and disrespectful. The flag deserves a place of honor and should be displayed separately from other items.
