4-8-2023 (SINGAPORE) A harrowing incident occurred when a train commuter in Singapore suffered a fracture to her ring and pinky fingers after they got caught in the gap between the MRT door and the train cabin. The unfortunate event took place at Lavender MRT station.
The victim, 48-year-old Ng, recounted the incident to Shin Min Daily News, explaining that she was heading home after work on Jul. 29, around 7.35 pm. When she boarded the train at Bugis MRT station, it was so crowded that she had to stand near the door for support.
As the train approached Lavender MRT station, Ng almost lost her balance, instinctively placing her left hand on the train door. Unfortunately, the doors opened at that exact moment, trapping her fingers in the gap between the door and the train cabin.
In excruciating pain, Ng screamed for help, and fortunately, several other passengers rushed to her aid, quickly closing the doors and preventing further harm. One commuter held her arm steady, potentially saving her fingers from being severed.
Emergency assistance was immediately called for, and the MRT train stopped promptly. Station staff arrived to offer basic medical treatment before taking her to their office. Subsequently, Ng sought medical attention at a hospital, incurring over S$200 in expenses for further treatment by an orthopedic doctor.
The injury caused immense pain, and the doctor prescribed weeks’ worth of pain medication to help Ng cope with her ordeal. Reflecting on the incident, Ng shared her hope that others would learn from her experience and refrain from placing their hands on train doors.
Ng expressed her gratitude towards the compassionate passengers who rushed to help her during the distressing incident.
