3-8-2023 (SEOUL) A shocking incident occurred in the town of Seongnam, south of Seoul, where a man drove a car onto a sidewalk and proceeded to stab people inside a shopping mall, resulting in one person’s death and at least 13 others being injured.
According to the police, the assailant stabbed nine individuals, while four others sustained injuries from the car. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and authorities have arrested one person in connection with the incident.
Forensic units have been dispatched to the AK Plaza to examine the scene of the violent attack. A white Kia hatchback with a broken front window and ruptured front tire was found on a sidewalk near the Seohyeon subway station.
In response to this distressing act, General Yoon Hee-keun of the National Police Agency referred to the incident as “virtually an act of terrorism” during a meeting on Thursday. Authorities are now considering implementing increased night-time patrols in leisure districts and crowded areas, along with reinforcing security camera surveillance.
This incident comes just a month after a separate knife-wielding attack in the capital, where at least four pedestrians were stabbed on a street. The recent escalation of such violent events is raising concerns over public safety and security in South Korea.
