31-7-2023 (SINGAPORE) In an unexpected twist of events, what started as a lighthearted joke turned into a dream wedding for Elson Tong and Yong Yong Qing, avid fans of McDonald’s. On July 19, they exchanged their vows at the fast-food chain’s West Coast Park outlet, with the iconic golden arches as their backdrop, surrounded by 55 of their closest family members and friends.
The couple, both 26 years old, met back in junior college in 2015 and have been together for a heartwarming seven years. The idea of getting married at McDonald’s emerged during a visit to the restaurant in April 2021 when Mr. Tong, who works in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, jokingly mentioned marrying a buttermilk crispy chicken burger, his favorite item on the menu. In jest, Ms. Yong, a senior associate at Changi Airport Group, responded, “Why don’t we get married at McDonald’s?”
Initially, the idea seemed amusing, but it gradually grew on them as they realized they wanted a relaxed and fun solemnization ceremony that truly reflected their personalities. The couple appreciated simplicity and fuss-free celebrations, where guests could dress comfortably and enjoy the occasion.
When their families and friends heard about their plans, they were taken by surprise. Mr. Tong’s parents thought it was a jest initially, but they quickly embraced the idea and showed their full support, cherishing the intimacy of the ceremony.
In May, Ms. Yong called the McDonald’s West Coast Park outlet to secure the pavilion on a weekday when the restaurant was less crowded. The manager readily approved, and the couple sent out invitations fashioned like McDonald’s coupons to their guests, collating their meal orders for the event. In total, they paid the fast-food chain around $700 for the food and venue.
On the big day, the couple arrived at the outlet around 1 pm and adorned the pavilion with drapes, flowers, and balloons with the help of their family and friends. Guests arrived dressed in vibrant hues of red and yellow, perfectly aligned with the theme of the venue. Ms. Yong looked elegant in a simple halter-neck white dress, while Mr. Tong wore a dashing tan suit.
The McDonald’s staff contributed to the couple’s joy by assisting with serving the food and diligently cleaning up the venue afterward. The manager even went the extra mile, visiting on her day off to ensure everything ran smoothly.
The couple expressed their happiness, knowing that their guests truly enjoyed the no-frills event. For them, it was the perfect ceremony, surrounded by the people they love in a place that felt like home.
As they summed it up in the words of McDonald’s iconic slogan, “We’re lovin’ it.”
This unique and heartwarming wedding at the West Coast Park outlet will undoubtedly remain a cherished memory for the couple and their loved ones.
