31-7-2023 (SINGAPORE) About 30 people were evacuated from neighbouring units after a fire broke out at a shophouse in Geylang on Monday morning (Jul 31). The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the fire at 61 Geylang Lorong 27 at around 7.30am. The fire was on the third floor and had burnt through the roof, spreading to the adjacent unit, according to SCDF.
Approximately 50 firefighters and 12 emergency vehicles were deployed to the scene. “At the height of the firefighting operation, four water jets were used to bring the fire under control,” said SCDF in a Facebook post. The blaze was extinguished within an hour and there were no reported injuries.
A video posted on Reddit showed flames and thick smoke rising from the rooftop of a shophouse, with people gathering on the pavement across the road.
Damping down operations were ongoing as of 9.30am, according to SCDF. The process involves wetting burnt surfaces immediately after a blaze is put out to prevent a fire from potentially rekindling from the hot burnt surfaces.
