31-7-2023 (BANGKOK) In the aftermath of the tragic fireworks blast that occurred in tambon Muno, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has swiftly ordered officials to extend immediate assistance to the victims. The incident, which took place on Saturday around 3 pm at a warehouse, has resulted in 12 fatalities, 121 injuries, and extensive damage to 292 houses, with 50 of them completely destroyed.
Deputy government spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek assured survivors that the state would provide both financial and psychological support to help them cope with the aftermath of the disaster. The Narathiwat governor has taken prompt action by establishing a temporary shelter for the victims at the sports field of the Muno Subdistrict Administrative Organisation. Emergency aid has already been offered to all victims to address their immediate needs.
His Majesty the King has also shown empathy and concern for the victims by sending survival kits and arranging a canteen at the shelter. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha expressed his gratitude for the King’s compassionate response to the tragedy.
Lt Gen Santi Sakultanak, commander of the 4th Army, has taken further steps to prevent such incidents from recurring. He has ordered officials to conduct safety inspections at 52 fireworks warehouses across Narathiwat and also issued similar instructions for warehouses in Pattani and Yala.
During his visit to the shelter, Lt Gen Santi emphasized the importance of investigating the fireworks factory’s compliance with the required permits. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers have been deployed to assess the site of the explosion and determine the quantity of fireworks stored in the warehouse. Early estimates suggest that at least 5 tonnes of fireworks were present at the site, judging from the impact of the powerful blast.
The factory, registered under the name Wirawat Panich, has drawn the attention of the authorities. The owner, who is currently on holiday with his family, has been summoned for questioning by the police. He may potentially face criminal charges, including negligence leading to death and unauthorized importation or sale of fireworks, under the Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives, and Fireworks Act. Other charges, such as causing a fire resulting in property damage, injuries, and death, may also be pursued.
Over 50 forensics officers are working diligently to collect samples and gather evidence from the blast site. Investigators are also interviewing residents to gain insights into the events leading up to the tragic incident. The authorities are determined to hold those responsible accountable and take necessary measures to prevent such disasters in the future.
