28-7-2023 (MANILA) Typhoon Egay has wreaked havoc in the Philippines, resulting in the deaths of at least 13 individuals and affecting over 500,000 people, according to a report released by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Friday.
The NDRRMC confirmed six deaths, while the validation process for the other seven cases is still underway, as stated in their report.
The latest report from the NDRRMC reveals that the combined impact of Typhoon Egay and the southwest monsoon has affected more than half a million residents, displacing over 42,000 individuals and causing injuries to 12 people.
To ensure the safety of the local population, approximately 17,000 individuals from Regions 1, 2, 3, MIMAROPA, and 6 were preemptively evacuated by authorities in anticipation of the cyclone and southwest monsoon, according to the NDRRMC.
Of those affected, around 29,000 individuals have sought refuge in evacuation centers, with over 13,000 individuals being accommodated, the NDRRMC added.
Furthermore, the combined impact of Typhoon Egay and the southwest monsoon has had devastating consequences for the agricultural sector. The NDRRMC estimates that more than 3,000 farmers and fisherfolk have been affected. The damage to crops and infrastructure has resulted in production losses amounting to at least P58 million, according to the NDRRMC.
In addition, the typhoon has caused approximately P2 million worth of damage to infrastructure. The NDRRMC reported damage to six roads, six bridges, two schools, two government facilities, and one private establishment.
