26-7-2023 (PHNOM PENH) In a surprising announcement on Wednesday, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, one of the world’s longest-serving leaders, declared his resignation from office, ending his nearly four-decade-long hardline rule. The 69-year-old leader stated in a special broadcast on state television that he would step down from his position as prime minister, passing the reins of power to his eldest son, Hun Manet, who will take charge of the new government.
“I would like to ask for understanding from the people as I announce that I will not continue as prime minister,” said Hun Sen during the broadcast.
