17-7-2023 (NEW YORK) Over the weekend, the United States Northeast was hit by severe thunderstorms and heavy rain, leading to the cancellation of over 1,500 flights in and out of the country. Major airports in New York and New Jersey have experienced ground stops, causing massive flight disruptions.
The Federal Aviation Administration reported that Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey had the most significant cancellations, with 362 flights canceled and 337 delayed as of Sunday evening. John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York saw 318 canceled flights and 426 delayed flights, while LaGuardia Airport had 270 canceled flights.
Boston Logan International Airport also experienced a ground stop due to thunderstorms on Sunday evening, with nearly 260 flights canceled. The flight-tracking site FlightAware provided the data for these cancellations and delays.
Apart from flight disruptions, the heavy rain caused flash flooding and power outages in parts of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. Over 56 million people in the U.S. Northeast were under flood watch as a result.
