13-7-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) are considering the establishment of a special unit to address issues related to race, religion, and royalty (3R) during election campaigns, according to Fahmi Fadzil, the Communications and Digital Minister.
Fahmi stated that this decision comes after the Centre of Independent Journalism (CIJ) presented data on the 15th General Election (GE15), revealing a concerning number of 3R issues that were highlighted within a short period of time.
“Given the desperate tactics employed by some politicians during campaigns that exploit 3R issues, I believe MCMC and PDRM need to assess the need for a special unit. We cannot allow this trend to persist,” Fahmi said during the launch of the Global Conference on Communication, Culture and Contemporary Media (GLOCOM) 2023 in Kuala Lumpur on July 13.
Fahmi expressed disappointment in politicians who continue to use 3R materials in their campaigns despite the decree by the Malay Rulers, which states that political campaigns should avoid addressing 3R matters.
He also noted that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain have reminded all parties to refrain from exploiting 3R sensitivities during the upcoming state polls’ campaigning period.
