13-7-2023 (WASHINGTON) Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur, expressed his belief on Wednesday that China is keen on establishing a collaborative international framework for the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI). Musk disclosed his insights during a Twitter Space event where he engaged in conversation with two United States congressmen, namely Democrat Ro Khanna and Republican Mike Gallagher.
Musk confidently stated, “China has certainly demonstrated interest in fostering a cooperative international environment to regulate AI.” He further revealed his personal commitment to advocating for robust oversight and regulations surrounding artificial intelligence, highlighting his discussions during his recent visit to China.
This disclosure coincided with the highly anticipated launch of Musk’s own AI startup, xAI. Musk had engaged in months-long debates regarding the potential dangers of AI leading to “civilization destruction.”
A few weeks ago, Musk embarked on a trip to China, a country in which his electric vehicle company, Tesla, operates a prominent factory in Shanghai. During his visit, he engaged in significant meetings with esteemed figures such as China’s foreign, commerce, and industry ministers in Beijing. Additionally, Musk had the opportunity to meet with Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang, showcasing the level of importance and attention granted to his visit.
Following these discussions with Chinese officials, Musk publicized last month that the Chinese government expressed its intentions to implement comprehensive AI regulations within the country.
Various governments worldwide are actively considering strategies to address the potential risks associated with this rapidly emerging technology. In recent months, AI has witnessed a surge in investments and gained considerable popularity among consumers, particularly following the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Regulatory bodies around the globe are scrambling to develop effective guidelines governing the utilization of generative AI, a technology capable of producing text and images. Its impact has been likened to that of the internet, emphasizing the urgency in implementing proper regulations to ensure responsible and ethical use.
