12-7-2023 (SINGAPORE) Doctors in Singapore were left stunned after discovering an octopus lodged in a man’s throat during a gastrointestinal examination to determine the cause of his vomiting. The man began to vomit after eating a meal that included a whole live octopus, and when he realized he had difficulty swallowing, he immediately went to the emergency room to see a doctor.
The doctors quickly performed a CT scan which revealed an ultra-dense mass in the man’s esophagus, but they couldn’t determine what it was without a gastrointestinal examination. This is how they discovered that the man had an entire octopus stuck in his throat. Images shared by the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) research institute show the octopus lodged in the man’s esophagus, preventing him from swallowing.
Initially, the doctors attempted the “push technique,” which is usually very successful, but it didn’t work this time. Applying too much pressure to the esophagus could cause it to rupture.
Finally, they had to use forceps to grab the octopus and pull it out of the man’s throat.
It is not clear why the man swallowed the entire octopus, but fortunately, he recovered well after the gastrointestinal surgery and was discharged from the hospital two days later.
However, it is evident that he was not attempting to eat the octopus alive, as he could have choked to death. When swallowed, octopuses will desperately stick their tentacles to people’s throats, cutting off the flow of air.
