8-7-2023 (SINGAPORE) Adrian Tan, the president of the Law Society, has sadly died on Saturday (Jul 8) after bravely fighting cancer for over a year. He was 57 years old.
Mr. Tan, a partner at TSMP Law Corporation, was diagnosed with cancer in March of last year and publicly shared his condition a few months later through a post on LinkedIn.
In a statement released on Saturday evening, the Law Society announced his passing, describing Mr. Tan as a person who “exemplified extraordinary courage” throughout his battle with cancer. The statement also highlighted his unwavering dedication to his duties, his resilient spirit, and his trademark sense of humor.
“We not only mourn the loss of a distinguished leader but also grieve for a cherished friend and trusted comrade,” the statement read.
The Law Society, which represents lawyers and upholds professional standards in Singapore, expressed its deepest condolences to Mr. Tan’s family and loved ones. They acknowledged that his absence leaves an indescribable void and that his memory will forever hold a special place in their hearts.
Adrian Tan, who assumed the presidency of the Law Society on January 1, 2022, had been an active presence on social media, addressing various topics ranging from the legal industry to social issues. He aimed to boost the morale of lawyers and address the phenomenon of the “great resignation” within the profession.
In addition to his legal career, Mr. Tan was a well-known author, having penned The Teenage Textbook and The Teenage Workbook in the late 1980s. These books became bestsellers and were subsequently adapted into a play, movie, and television series.
