2-7-2023 (JAKARTA) Minister of Defense Prabowo Subianto has identified the mindset of government elites as one of the major challenges he faces during his tenure. In an interview with Najwa Shihab on Friday, he expressed concern that the comfort zone in which the elites have been residing for too long has led to a false sense of security and a disregard for potential threats to Indonesia’s defense.
Subianto explained that due to a prolonged period of peace, the elites have come to perceive this state as normal. Moreover, Indonesia is surrounded by friendly nations, further reinforcing the assumption that there are no immediate threats. This mindset creates difficulties as defense becomes devalued in the eyes of the elites, who consider it a non-essential aspect of governance.
Nevertheless, Subianto emphasized that throughout his nearly four-year tenure as Defense Minister, he has viewed defense as a crucial issue, even during peaceful times. He highlighted the importance of defense from a political and state perspective, as safeguarding the nation and its territory allows for safety, prosperity, and the protection of valuable resources.
Indonesia, with its abundant land and sea resources, including the world’s second-largest fish reserves, must remain vigilant in safeguarding its territory. The presence of foreign fishing boats in Indonesian waters poses a challenge that requires proactive defense measures.
To address these concerns, Subianto has been dedicated to modernizing Indonesia’s main weapons systems (alutsista) during his tenure. The Ministry of Defense has procured various types of advanced weaponry, including jet fighters, warships, and state-of-the-art radar systems, to enhance Indonesia’s defense capabilities.
Subianto’s commitment to bolstering Indonesia’s defense signifies his recognition of the vital role defense plays in safeguarding the nation’s resources and ensuring its long-term security.
