1-7-2023 (BRUNEI) – Brunei’s Tourism Development Department announced on Saturday that two of its villages – Mukim Tanjong Maya in Tutong District and Mukim Amo in Temburong District – have submitted their applications for the Best Tourism Villages by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
The UNWTO launched the Best Tourism Villages program in 2021 to make tourism a driver of rural development and well-being. The program evaluates villages based on nine areas, including sustainability, infrastructure, connectivity, and tourism value chain integration.
An independent international advisory board of experts in different fields will evaluate the applications. The board will select villages that meet the key criteria and exemplify Brunei Darussalam’s commitment to preserving its rich cultural heritage and pristine natural environments.
Brunei has been working to promote its tourism industry, which has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. The government has implemented measures to support the industry, such as the Brunei Tourism Board’s “Travel BruRe” campaign, which aims to encourage local tourism by offering discounts and promotions for domestic travel.
The Best Tourism Villages program is an opportunity for Brunei to showcase its unique culture and natural beauty to the world. It is hoped that the program will help to boost tourism in the country and support rural development.
