28-6-2023 (WASHINGTON) In a bid to bolster Ukraine’s counteroffensive capabilities and defend against Russia’s aggressive actions, the Defense Department has unveiled an additional security assistance package worth up to $500 million. The aid package includes essential resources such as armored vehicles, antiarmor systems, and crucial munitions for U.S.-provided Patriot air defense systems and High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems.
Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder emphasized the unwavering commitment of the United States to Ukraine while announcing the latest round of assistance. “Since the outset of Russia’s unlawful and unprovoked invasion, the U.S. has been steadfast in collaborating with our allies and partners to equip Ukraine with the necessary capabilities to address immediate battlefield requirements and long-term security assistance needs,” stated Ryder.
Under the Biden administration, over $40.5 billion in security assistance has been committed to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion began in February 2022. The current assistance package signifies the 41st drawdown of equipment from the Defense Department’s inventories for Ukraine since August 2021. This support comes at a time when Russia’s internal situation remains turbulent following an armed uprising by mercenaries from the Wagner Group.
President Joe Biden, addressing the recent events over the weekend, affirmed the United States’ commitment to coordinating with allies and supporting Ukraine. He expressed his determination to maintain constant communication with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, underscoring their shared objective of aiding Ukraine. Pentagon Press Secretary Ryder reiterated the United States’ focus on providing Ukraine with the necessary assistance to defend itself against Russia’s ongoing aggression.
“While the war in Ukraine persists and Russia’s illegal occupation continues, we will not lose sight of these facts,” Ryder stated firmly. “We will continue to work closely with our Ukrainian counterparts, ensuring they have the essential capabilities to execute their planned operations effectively.”
