26-6-2023 (HANOI) Bao Loc City in Lam Dong Province, Vietnam was hit by heavy rain for over an hour on June 25, causing severe flooding in many central streets. Cars stalled, water overflowed into houses, and people were swept away by the strong currents.
Around 4:00 pm, the downpour caused water to pour in from all directions, flooding streets such as Le Van Tam, Ky Con, Ha Giang, and Le Hong Phong, with some sections submerged in almost a meter of water. The strong currents caused water to flow rapidly, making it impossible for cars and motorbikes to pass through.
On Ha Giang Street, the water turned into a powerful stream that swept away a man on a motorbike. He was rescued by nearby residents, but his bike was lost. The floodwater also entered many low-lying houses, damaging household items.
The local authorities of Bao Loc City issued warnings for deep flooded areas with strong currents and dispatched forces to weak spots to alert and assist residents. An hour later, the rain subsided, and the floodwater receded rapidly.
According to the Lam Dong Hydro-Meteorological Station, the thunderstorms brought over 66mm of rainfall to Loc Son Ward in Bao Loc City between 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on June 25. Other districts such as Bao Lam, Cat Tien, Da Teh, and Da Huoai also experienced heavy rain.
The station warned of flash floods, landslides, and advised residents living near rivers and small streams in the area to be cautious when passing through flooded bridges, culverts, and dry streams. In the next few hours, there is a possibility of heavy rainfall in the region.
Bao Loc City covers an area of over 232 km² with a population of nearly 160,000 people (as of 2019). Located on the Di Linh Plateau at an altitude of 800-1,000 meters above sea level, Bao Loc enjoys a cool climate all year round.
On June 23, due to the influence of a low-pressure trough, a 30-minute heavy rain hit Da Lat City, causing many streets to flood, trees to fall, cars to stall, and water to overflow into houses. The weather agency said that the record-breaking rainfall of 35-60mm within an hour was the main reason for some areas in Da Lat to be submerged in water.
