26-6-2023 (BANGKOK) Senator Akanit Muensawad has stated that, besides Pita Limjaroenrat from the Move Forward Party (MFP), additional names could be nominated for the parliamentary selection of the next prime minister. He responded to growing pressure from MFP supporters, who insist that senators vote in favor of Mr. Pita for the role. Gen Akanit explained that since there could be multiple candidates, senators have the right to choose the most suitable candidate based on ethical standards and capability.
In response to speculation that the Senate would be held responsible if Mr. Pita fails to secure at least 376 votes, Gen Akanit remarked, “Well, they should gather 376 votes from MPs from the beginning, then senators will totally opt out of voting [to select the new PM] altogether. You will become the government if you get 376 votes right from the beginning. Can you? Don’t make it sound like the Senate’s fault.”
Senator Jate Siratharanont disclosed that some senators have closed the door on potential discussions with the MFP regarding Senate support for Mr. Pita’s candidacy as the next prime minister. The MFP’s intention to amend Section 112, also known as the lese majeste law, has deterred some senators.
When asked about the MFP’s armed forces reform policy, Gen Akanit expressed his support for reforms initiated by the armed forces themselves, rather than the version proposed by the MFP. He accused the MFP of emulating the organizational structure of the US military as a model for its proposed reform of the Thai armed forces.
Under the MFP’s proposed reforms, conscription would be abolished, and institutions such as the Defence Council, Internal Security Operation Command (Isoc), and military court would be eliminated.
