10-9-2023 (JAKARTA) A powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Central Sulawesi province in Indonesia on Saturday, according to the country’s meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency. The quake, which occurred at 21:43 local time (1443 GMT), had its epicenter located 49 km northwest of Donggala Regency. It had a depth of 20 km beneath the seabed.
Fortunately, the earthquake did not generate any significant tsunamis, the agency confirmed. However, the tremors prompted residents of two coastal villages in the regency to evacuate as a precautionary measure. Muhammad Fikri, an official from the data and information center of the provincial disaster management and mitigation agency, reported that over 1,000 villagers had fled the coastal areas due to fears of potential aftershocks.
