2-1-2025 (KUALA LUMPUR) Four locals have died following their attendance at a massive electronic dance music event in Selangor, authorities confirmed yesterday. The victims, comprising two men and two women aged between 20 and 40, were reported to police by the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC).
Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan stated that post-mortem examinations have been conducted, though laboratory analyses are still pending. The deceased had attended the ‘Pinkfish’ New Year Countdown celebration at Sunway Lagoon’s Surf Beach, which drew over 18,000 revellers.
“No external injuries were found on the victims, and we have initially classified this as sudden death,” Khan said in an official statement. “Our investigations are continuing to determine if foul play or poisoning might have been involved.”
The festival, jointly organised by Hitman Solutions and Happymoon, featured prominent international acts including Blasterjaxx, Cosmic Gate, and Sara Landry. The event garnered positive reviews for its production values, including elaborate stage design, sound systems, and laser displays, culminating in a New Year’s fireworks spectacular.
This incident bears haunting similarities to the 2014 Future Music Festival Asia (FMFA) tragedy in Bukit Jalil, where six people lost their lives. While initial reports suggested drug involvement, subsequent forensic investigations revealed a different story.
Professor Dr K. Nadesan, who headed UMMC’s forensic pathology department at the time, later confirmed that heatstroke, not drug overdose, was responsible for the FMFA deaths. Post-mortem examinations showed severely dehydrated bodies, with one victim recording a temperature of 39°C at death. Notably, some casualties showed no traces of illegal substances.
