27-11-2024 (UTTAR PRADESH) Three men lost their lives in a tragic accident when their vehicle plunged from an unfinished bridge into a riverbed after following Google Maps directions in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh state, authorities confirmed today.
The incident occurred in the early hours of November 24 when the victims, identified as brothers Nitin and Ajit, both 30, and their companion Amit, 40, were travelling near Allapur village. Their vehicle fell approximately 15 metres onto the Ramganga riverbed after driving onto an incomplete bridge section that had collapsed during floods earlier this year.
Faridpur police officer Ashutosh Shivam revealed that the navigation app had not been updated to reflect the bridge’s partial collapse, and the site lacked proper safety barriers or warning signage. Local villagers discovered the wreckage and its occupants the following morning, promptly alerting authorities.
“The damaged vehicle, believed to be a Wagon R taxi, was found with all three occupants deceased at the scene,” a police spokesperson confirmed. Post-mortem examinations have been ordered for all victims.
The incident has sparked outrage among local residents and bereaved family members, who have demanded accountability from the Public Works Department for failing to secure the hazardous site. “This negligence demands a formal investigation. Why was an incomplete bridge left accessible to traffic?” questioned a relative of the deceased.
Investigations are currently underway with four Public Works Department engineers and a Google Maps representative assisting authorities. Google has expressed condolences and pledged full cooperation with the investigation.
