10-7-2023 (BANGKOK) Tragedy struck in Bangkok’s Lat Krabang district on Monday evening when an elevated road section under construction collapsed, resulting in the death of two individuals and injuries to approximately ten others.
The incident occurred around 6pm when a 500-metre-long segment of the elevated road across Wat Polmanee intersection suddenly gave way, plummeting onto the road below. The collapsed section is part of the 2.2-kilometre-long Onnut-Lat Krabang elevated road project commissioned by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
The collapse site extended from a Lotus Lat Krabang branch to the Jorakay Noi police station, causing significant damage and disruption. Preliminary investigations have revealed that an overturned crane, responsible for lifting the four-lane concrete road segment, led to the disastrous collapse.
As the segment crashed down, it tragically crushed vehicles on the road below and caused steel structures to collide with nearby commercial buildings. The impact resulted in the immediate fatalities of two individuals who were inside their vehicle at the time of the incident.
In response to the collapse, the affected section of Luang Phaeng Road has been closed to traffic, and the incident also caused a local power outage.
Authorities are currently conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the collapse and assess the extent of the damage.
