21-11-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) Following the recent unrest in northern Myanmar, 109 Malaysian citizens are currently stranded in the town of Laukkaing, according to Wisma Putra, Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry.
In a statement released on Monday (Nov 20), the ministry revealed that many of these individuals fell victim to fraudulent job offers. Wisma Putra has been actively coordinating rescue efforts in collaboration with the Malaysian Embassy in Yangon, the Malaysian Embassy in Beijing, and the Consulate General of Malaysia in Kunming.
The ministry has been working closely with the foreign ministries of China and Myanmar to ensure the safe return of all Malaysians involved. Additionally, local police and the Immigration Department are actively engaged in efforts to facilitate the Malaysians’ repatriation.
Wisma Putra reiterated its commitment to addressing the issue of Malaysians who have become victims of fraudulent job syndicates operating overseas. They emphasized the importance of caution for Malaysians seeking employment abroad and urged individuals to thoroughly verify the legitimacy of any job offers they receive.
