6-2-2024 (HONG KONG) Tragedy struck at Hong Kong International Airport on Tuesday (Feb 6) as a ground worker lost his life in a rare incident when he was struck by a towed aircraft, authorities confirmed. The unfortunate event led to an arrest on charges of dangerous driving.
The victim, an unnamed 34-year-old Jordanian national employed in Hong Kong, was reportedly riding in the passenger seat of a tow truck when he fell from the vehicle and was subsequently hit by the aircraft it was towing, according to police reports.
Emergency responders discovered the man lying on a taxiway with severe injuries during the early hours of Tuesday, as detailed in a statement released by the police. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Hong Kong airport authority disclosed that the deceased individual was an employee of China Aircraft Services, a ground support and maintenance firm. The authority speculated that the accident may have occurred due to the staff member failing to fasten his seat belt while working on the vehicle.
In response to the incident, authorities have arrested the 60-year-old driver of the vehicle on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death. The driver is currently in custody pending further investigation, the police confirmed.
